Gift Gondwe and Joline Bapu- Pereira dominated this year’s United General Insurance (UGI) golf tournament at Blantyre Sports Club on Saturday.
Gondwe, playing with a handicap of 12, scored 79 gross and 67 net to emerge winner in the men’s section whereas Blantyre Sports Club Golf Section Captain, Sam Mwale, was second with 81 gross and 65 net.
Thoko Kamvea finished third with 81 gross and 69 net.
Gondwe described the tournament as tough and said winning required composure and focus.
“I was concentrating throughout and I never lost focus. I thank the sponsor for the support. It is not easy to get sponsorship nowadays. Without sponsorship, there would be nothing to compete for,” he said.
In the ladies section, Bapu- Pereira, on a handicap of 23, scored 94 gross and 71 net whereas Margaret Mukwena (handicap 25) scored 98 gross and 71 net to finish on second position.
Bapu-Pereira hailed her playing partners for supporting and motivating her to win the event.
“It feels good to win the tournament, especially that I am also a client of UGI. My partners carried me along until I made it,” she said.
In subsidiary prizes, Phil Mphambana won the nearest to the pin on hole one in the men’s section while Pereira won on hole five in the ladies section.
Diana Kambale hit the longest drive in the ladies section on hole two while Paulo Araujo did it in the men’s category on hole 17.
UGI Chief Executive Officer, Bywell Chiwoni, said the company sponsored the tournament through its new product, AutoServe, which is a basket of several related insurance covers and services packaged together to offer seamless protection to owners of high valued cars and fleet.
