Joseph Kamwendo plans own testimonial
Former Malawi national football team star midfielder Joseph Kamwendo has said he is considering organising a farewell match in February so that he bids farewell to the soccer fraternity.
Kamwendo announced his retirement from active football last week and was scheduled to play his last match for Be Forward Wanderers on Saturday in Kasungu against Nyasa Big Bullets.
However, the former Orlando Pirates and TP Mazembe midfielder was unable to make his last appearance on the pitch during the charity match as he was dropped on disciplinary grounds.
He said the idea to organise the farewell match in Blantyre was also a way of paying tribute to various stakeholders who supported him throughout his football carrier.
“Knowing that I had a successful football career as a player I thought it wise that it will be a great move to say good bye to the people who supported me throughout my career,” he said.
Kamwendo said he is considering approaching some of his former teammates at Orlando Pirates such as Lucky Lekgwathi, Teko Modise, Moeneeb Josephs, Andile Jali, Isaac Chansa and Happy Jele.
“I have played with different players at different clubs. It would be nice if I can have one or two players that I played with outside this country to come and grace the occasion. We will try to find partners that can be part of this programme we will like to have players from different countries,” he said.
K amwendo, who is doubling as technical assistant at Wanderers’ reserve side and assistant Coach for the Walter Nyamilandu Academy, said he will also extend an invitation to Zimbabwe’s Caephas Chimedza and former Caps United Captain Laughter Chilembi who is now coaching in Zambia.
Kamwendo is one of the country’s widely travelled players after playing in countries such as South Africa, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe and Denmark.
