Joseph Mwale attains Fide Master title
By Mphatso Malidadi:
Malawi’s highest-rated chess player Joseph Mwale has attained a Fide Master (FM) title at the World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia.
The Olympiad has proved to be a great success for Malawi as Mwale’s compatriots, Ellen Mpinganjira and George Mwale, also won titles.
Mwale, formerly a Candidate Master, collected 6.5 points out of 9 games to attain the new norm.
He becomes the second FM for Malawi after Gerald Mphungu who attained his title in 2014 in Tromso, Norway.
Chess Association of Malawi Publicity Secretary Alfred Chimthere said the FM title is attained by winning at least 66.66 per cent of one’s first nine games in any international Fide-rated tournament.
George Mwale joins the country’s list of CMs that includes Chiletso Chipanga, Petros Mfune, Chimthere, Joseph Nyambalo and Paul Khuphwathea whereas Mpinganjira becomes the second woman to win a title for Malawi after WCM Linda Jambo Chaononga.
The other great performance for Malawi was in 2016 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where two players, Petros Mfune and Paul Khuphwathea attained the Candidate Master title.
