Malawi’s highest-rated chess player Fide Master Joseph Mwale has been selected to participate in the 2023 Kenya Open Chess Championship.

The championship will run from April 6 to 10 at the Sarit Expo Centre in Nairobi, Kenya,

Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) Publicity Secretary Francisco Mwangupili said Mwale will travel to Kenya following support from Satguru Travel.

“Chessam will facilitate FM Joseph’s participation in the tournament. This initiative is in line with Chessam’s mission to promote the game of chess and its aspiration to produce Malawi’s first International Master (IM) and perhaps a Grandmaster (GM) under the GM Project,” Mwangupili said.

Other players in the GM Project include Candidate Master Chiletso Chipanga, Woman Fide Master Linda Jambo, and Desiderata Nkhoma.

Mwangupili said the association is confident that Mwale will give his best effort at the tournament and achieve good results.

“We wish him all the best in his preparations and during the games,” he said.

Organised by the Chess Kenya Federation and Terrian Chess Africa, the Kenya Open Chess Championship promises to be a highly competitive international tournament.

Title norms are expected to be awarded, according to Fide regulations, presenting Mwale with an opportunity to aim for an International Master norm.

Last year in December, Candidate Master Chiletso Chipanga was supported to participate at the Mozambique Open Chess Championship under the GM Project, where he emerged champion.
