Joseph Mwale eyes top championships
By Mphatso Malidadi:
South Africa-based Malawian Fide Master, Joseph Mwale, has intensified preparations for two major open championships by winning the 2019 Condorgreen-Mitchells Plain Chess Club Open.
Mwale is preparing for the South Africa Open set for June 15 to 22 and also the Zambia Open scheduled for July 2.
Following his success at Condorgreen-Mitchells, Mwale has now won eight competitions in South Africa this year.
The win is his 60th since he left Malawi for the Rainbow Nation.
“I have started my preparations and wanted to face new competition in Cape Town. I won ahead of South Africa’s chess legend, Watu Kobese,” he said.

Mwale said the two upcoming tournaments were a good platform to help him earn a better rating as he aspires to be Malawi’s first Grand Master.
During the Condorgreen- Mitchells Plain Chess Club Open, International Master Kobese finished second, with Kenneth Willenberg and Craig Willenberg ending on third and fourth position, respectively.
For finishing first, Mwale won the grand prize of R10,000 (K500,000).
