Journalists survive road accident

mnelembaThree journalists from Lilongwe on Saturday afternoon survived a road accident after a car they were travelling in overturned three times along Bunda- Mitundu road.

The journalists are Arnold Mnelemba from Ufulu FM, Chris Loka, who works for Channel for All Nations, and Brian Itai from Malawi News Agency (Mana).

Mnelemba was admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital for some hours while his friend, Mashani Mshali, who was driving the vehicle, is still hospitalised.

Loka and Itai were treated as outpatients.

In an interview yesterday, Mnelemba said he sustained a few injuries on the face and developed some soft tissues around the neck and is now wearing a neck collar.

“I am feeling much better now but I’ve been advised to keep visiting the hospital as an outpatient. The problem is that there is no X-ray machine at Kamuzu Central Hospital so everything is being done at ABC Clinic,” he said.

According to Itai, the journalists, who are also members of Bwaila Media Club, were on their way from Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) where they had played a social football game with the college students.

Said Itai: “After overtaking a vehicle in front of us, the driver lost control in an attempt to avoid a cyclist who was coming in the [opposite] direction. The car swayed and ended up overturning three times in a maize field on the other side of the road.”
