Relief was the prevalent emotion as Be Forward Wanderers claimed their first victory of the season after beating TN Stars 3-0 in a late kickoff at Kasungu Stadium Sunday.
It was a perfect response from the Nomads just 24 hours after a painful 1-1 draw with Kamuzu Barracks at Nankhaka Stadium.
At Kasungu Stadium, the match started late due to heavy rains but that did not stop Wanderers from exorcising their demons.
Before the match against Stars, the Nomads had gone three consecutive games without a win after drawing with Mzuzu Warriors, Silver Strikers and Kamuzu Barracks.
On a water-logged pitch, the Nomads were brave as they scored two goals in the first half.
Nigerian defender Yinusa Sherrif opened his Wanderers account with a close range finish after Stars goalkeeper Blackson Kotei fumbled Isaac Kaliati’s corner-kick before the half hour mark.
Vincent Nyangulu doubled the lead in the first half from close range.
Nyangulu was not done yet as he completed his brace in the second half with a well taken goal to ensure maximum points for the Nomads.
The hosts came close to scoring when Ian Chinyama hit the post with a double kick.
Chiletso Zoya and China Chirwa were constant threats but failed to find the back of the net.
Following the win, Wanderers have moved up to position six on the log table with six points from four matches, five points behind leaders Red Lions, who have played five matches.
Wanderers Coach Bob Mpinganjira was a relieved person.
“The players responded well and it was a deserved victory for us. This is a morale-boosting win but we will not relax in the next matches,” he said.
His opposite number Joseph Malizani conceded defeat.
“Wanderers were better than us and utilised their chances,” he said.
At Mpira Stadium in Blantyre, Ntopwa’s impressive form continued after a 5-2 victory over Chitipa United.
Portipher Likoswe hammered a hat-trick for Ntopwa, with Hendrix Mitsinde and Kondwani Saizi scoring a goal each, whereas Khumbo Ng’ambi and Alex Benson scored for Chitipa.
With the win, Ntopwa have displaced Silver on second position with nine points from four matches.
In another match, Blue Eagles and Karonga United shared spoils after a 3-3 draw at Nankhaka Stadium.
Maxwell Salambula netted a brace for Eagles, with Gaddie Chirwa also on target for the side, whereas Mphatso Kamanga also scored a brace and Clement Nyondo scored the other goal for Karonga.
Elsewhere, Mafco registered their first win of the season after a 2-0 victory over Mighty Tigers at Chitowe Ground.
Peter Katsonga and Stain Malata were on target for the Salima-based soldiers.
