Joyah faces Mkandawire in Fama presidency fight

Veteran filmmaker Shemu Joyah has challenged the incumbent Ezaius Mkandawire for the post of Film Association of Malawi (Fama) presidency scheduled for next month in Lilongwe.
Joyah, who has produced three award winning movies namely Seasons of a Life, The Last Fishing Boat and The Road to Sunrise, has confirmed.
“Yes I am contesting. I thought I should take a more active role in Fama and try to improve things,” Joyah said Monday.
Mkandawire is seeking another term in office to lead the film industry.
The elections are part of the agenda during Fama’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) which was expected to be held last month but due to Covid-19 pandemic, it was rescheduled to June 5, 2020.
“We are hoping that everything will normalise by then. We will also get guidance from the government and Copyright Society of Malawi on possibilities,” he said.
Mkandawire said all executive positions were up for grabs starting from president to committee members.
Meanwhile, Mkandawire has said that there was a massive improvement of membership.
“Let me also take this opportunity to ask fellow artists and people out there to stay safe and put on protective wear in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.
