Joyce Banda camp in fear of Mzomera Ngwira’s threats

Some members of People’s Party in the Northern Region, sympathising with the party’s president Joyce Banda, are living in fear following threats issued by the party’s Provincial Chairperson Mzomera Ngwira that he would “finish” all those regional members opposing his agenda to have former vice president Khumbo Kachali lead the party.

The threats, made by Ngwira in Mzuzu on Sunday, compelled the JB camp to hold an emergency meeting on Monday.

The party’s Deputy Provincial Chairperson Patrick Ngoma, who is leading the camp against Ngwira, confirmed reporting the threats to Mzuzu Police Station on Monday, arguing that their lives are in danger.

One of JB’s loyalists Oscar Chisi, who sneaked into Ngwira’s meeting, told The Daily Times on Monday that Ngwira threatened to finish them, their homes and businesses because he knew where they all stayed.

Said Chisi: “While pointing at me and Ziffer Mumba who is Director of Research and also referring to our JB camp members, Ngwira said he is a mafia. He knows our homes, businesses and everything. He said he did big things when he was with DPP… who are we? We are very small…and he will finish us completely.”

But Mzuzu Police Station Public Relations Officers Martin Bwanali said on Tuesday that the station was yet to receive the information.

In an interview, Ngwira said what he meant was that he would finish them politically.

“I know these few people are being sponsored by the party leader who is outside the country. The aim is to silence the proposal we made over the party leadership. I said I am going to finish them politically and not physically. This is a political fight and not what they are thinking … politicians can finish each other politically,” argued Ngwira.

At Ngwira’s meeting, PP women led by the recently reinstated Director of Women Cliffer Kondowe sang songs against Banda while endorsing Kachali as their best leader for the party. In their songs, they said it was high time the party was led by a Tumbuka.

The two camps emerged in June this year after Ngwira endorsed Kachali as party leader in the absence of Banda. Ngwira’s camp comprises Director of Women Kondowe, Deputy Director of Youth Lapken Thindwa, National Governing Council Member Brown Soko and other regional executive members and Mzuzu City Constituency committee members.

The JB camp comprises Acting Regional Secretary Violet Chituzu Nyirenda, Director of Youth Lackson Stambuli, Director of Research Ziffer Mumba and his deputy Oscar Kaunda, Deputy Director of Women Jane Msiska, Deputy Organising Secretary Ipyana Nthakomwa and eight other regional committee members.
