Joyce Banda sues MBC, Kondwani Nankhumwa
Former president Joyce Banda has dragged to court Minister of Information Kondwani Nankhumwa for alleging that a person named JB plotted the death of former president Bingu wa Mutharika.
Banda is seeking damages from Nankhumwa over the remarks he made during a memorial service held in honour of Mutharika.
She is also seeking an injunction restraining Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) from rebroadcasting the speech Nankhumwa made.
Judiciary spokesperson, Mlenga Mvula, confirmed the development in an interview last evening.
“According to documents filed at Blantyre High Court registry this afternoon, the former president is seeking damages for defamation. She is also seeking an injunction restraining MBC from airing and rebroadcasting sentiments about Joyce Banda being behind the death of the former president,” Mvula said.
According to Mvula, the court is yet to assign a judge to the case. He said the application was filed by lawyer Lusungu Gondwe.
During the event held at Ndata on Saturday, Nankhumwa alleged Bingu might have died due to a plot by people who were desperate to rule the country.
Mutharika died of cardiac arrest in April 2012.
