Joyce Mvula shines
Malawi’s goal-shooter Joyce Mvula has, in her second campaign in the United Kingdom’s (UK) Vitality Netball Superleague, earned kudos, following her lightning-quick exploits with Manchester Thunder.
After starring in three games over the weekend, the former Blue Eagles Sisters player, once again, delivered on Monday night at Leicester Arena to guide Thunder to a 56-55 win over Loughborough Lightning.
The fourth win on the bounce put Thunder level with leaders, Wasps Netball, in the 10-member league.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Thunder’s player Emma Dovey hailed the contribution of Mvula, who went in with her side trailing 17-13 in the first-quarter.
“It’s really difficult to come on so early and, as a shooter, it can knock your confidence if you are not in the starting- seven. We need to look at how we start games—we show character and we pull through in the end, but our starts are letting us down,” Dovey was quoted as saying.
Lightning Coach, Anna Carter, said: “We didn’t play with intensity. The game-plan was solid but game-plans are only good if you stick to them with intensity. We didn’t manage that.”
Elsewhere, Wasps put an end to Heatherford Mavericks— employers of Malawian netball legend, Mary Waya— unblemished start, winning 66- 52.
It is expected that Mvula, Australia-based Mwawi Kumwenda and UK’s Team Northumbria-bound versatile player, Laureen Ngwira, will be the catalysts for the Queens’ return to form.
