Joyce Mvula, Towera Vinkhumbo maintain 2nd position, Mwawi Kumwenda in top 5

Malawi National Netball Team stars in the United Kingdom (UK) and Australia continue to feature highly in various statistics categories after weekend matches.

In the UK Vitality Netball Superleague, goal shooter Joyce Mvula of Manchester Thunder has maintained her position in the top goal scorers’ category with 651 goals behind leader Peace Proscovia’s 785.

Another Queens star goalkeeper Towera Vinkhumbo, who plies her trade at Strathclyde Sirens, is also second best in two categories.

In the most intercepts category, Vinkhumbo has 50 and is only second to Layla Guscoth of Team Bath Netball who leads with 52.

The former Kukoma Diamonds stalwart is also competing favourably in the turnovers category where she is tied with Shaquanda Greene-Noel at 91.

In Australia’s Suncorp Super Netball League, Mwawi Kumwenda features in the top five in three categories.

Kumwenda comes fourth in the offensive rebounds category with 27, five behind leader Jhaniele Fowler’s 32.

In the goals category, the former Diamonds superstar is third with 403 against West Coast Fever’s Fowler who leads with 569.

Kumwenda’s 444 goal attempts have placed her on fourth position in the category that Fowler leads with 593.

Netball Association of Malawi General Secretary Isaac Chimwala described the stars’ performance as encouraging ahead of July’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

“We are excited because our stars are at the top of their game. Our wish is to go into this tournament with all our best players. We are meeting some of the toughest teams in the world and we need all our best weapons for this fight.

“When going for a big tournament like the Commonwealth Games, you need all your players to be match-fit and what is happening to our three players is very beneficial to our campaign,” Chimwala said.

Malawi are in Group B of the competition alongside New Zealand, Uganda, Northern Ireland and Trinidad and Tobago.
