KAKHOME—Tobacco-buying companies should invest in ICT

One of the country’s tobacco-buying companies, JTI Leaf Malawi Limited, has developed a mobile phone application designed to enhance interaction between growers and the buyer.

JTI Leaf Malawi Limited Director of Corporate Affairs and Communications, Limbani Kakhome, said the company appreciates the importance of Information and Communication Technology in agriculture.

Kakhome made the remarks in Lilongwe on Thursday when addressing journalists on post-marketing season programmes and achievements the company has made in years of its operations.

He said since E-Agriculture is becoming an emerging field, focusing on enhancement extension and advisory services, it is imperative that tobacco-buying companies should invest in ICT.

“This application allows our agronomists to interact and share information with growers. Using the app, growers can access information on his or her loan performance, market outlook and prices,” he said.

Tobacco Association of Malawi operations manager, Tony Jamali, said coming in of JTI Leaf Malawi Limited on the market has promoted competition among buyers.

In his remarks, Tobacco Commission marketing and Business Development Officer, Wesley Msungeni, commended JTI Leaf Malawi Limited for the role it is playing in developing the tobacco sector through various innovations it is employing to improve the quality of the leaf.
