The Magistrate Court in Blantyre Monday released Judiciary spokesperson Mlenga Mvula and Reverend Daniel Mhone on bail.

Mvula was arrested on Friday while Mhone was arrested Monday for allegedly engaging in corrupt practices at the United Methodist Church where they congregate.

Both Mvula and Mhone are answering charges of obtaining money by false pretence while Mvula also has a separate charge of misuse of public office.

A statement from the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) signed by its Senior Public Relations Officer, Egrita Ndala, on Friday, said the bureau received a complaint that between 2016 and 2017, Mvula allegedly solicited sums of money amounting to K10.7 million and other favours from the church.

However, ACB prosecutor Macmillan Chakhala told the court that the bureau did not take Mvula to court to take his plea, saying the ACB was not ready with their investigations on the matter.

Chakhala asked the court not to release the two suspects on bail until Tuesday when they will be taking caution statements.

However, defence lawyer Chancy Gondwe argued that the two deserved to be granted bail.

“The ACB was not ready. They came without a charge sheet and also tried to block bail. We argued that it is their [suspects] fundamental right [to bail] and [they were] ready to enter into any bond with the ACB and the court agreed,” he said.
