Junior Flames off to South Africa

After three weeks of camp training in preparation for this year’s Cosafa-Under 20 championships, the junior Flames finally flew out of the country yesterday for South Africa through Chileka Airport.

The team is drawn against Zambia and Zimbabwe in group B and will play their opening match against Zimbabwe on Friday before facing Zambia on Sunday.

Under the mentorship of Gerald Phiri and his assistant Enos Chatama, the 20-member squad includes goalkeepers Christopher Mikuwa and Hudson Mapila.

Defenders are Precious Sambani, Kondwani Mwaila, Happy Kusamba, Haj i Wal i, Kennedy Kachimanga and Nickson Nyasulu.

2016 Cosafa Under 17 Cup Golden Boot winner, Peter Banda, Nyasa Big Bullets’ Mike Mkwate, Chimwemwe Chidana, Mphatso Magaleta, Ronald Pangani, Konzani Chitsa and Envior Johnson have been tasked to man the team’s midfield.

Northern Region Football League current top goal scorer, Abel Mwakilama, joins Frank Chizuze, Francisco Madinga and Japhet Mwang’ani in the striking force.

Griffin Saenda Jr has travelled with the team as Technical Director, while Football Association of Malawi Second Vice President Othaniel Hara leads the delegation.

The team has not played any international friendly match in preparation for the tournament apart from the local games against Nyasa Big Bullets, Be Forward Wanderers and Premier Bet Wizards.

The 2016 Cosafa Under-20 Championships will be played in South Africa’s North West province from December 7-16.
