Malawi under-20 national football team is set to go to this year’s Cosafa Youth Championship in Kitwe, Zambia, without friendlies.

The junior Flames are yet to regroup but reports suggest that the team is expected to regroup this week ahead of the tournament which starts on December 2 to14.

In an interview on Monday, Football Association of Malawi Vice President James Mwenda, said there was no indication that the team would play friendlies.

“At the moment, we have not secured any friendly match for the team. But, if all goes well, we might play a practice match in Zambia before the tournament kicks off. It is not easy to secure a friendly match because most of the teams that we can play against are also going to Zambia,” Mwenda said.

He said it was not possible to organise players for the team because most of them are still in school.

“The players are still in school, so we [are afraid that we] can disturb them. Secondly, we already have a strong under-20 national team which is giving us hope ahead of the tournament,” Mwenda added.

The junior Flames are in Group A alongside hosts Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique.

Malawi have failed to go past the group stages in the past two editions of the regional competition.
