Junior tennis squad wins two medals
Malawi national junior tennis squad has won two medals at the first edition of the ITF/CAT Southern Africa junior circuit in Botswana.
The team’s under-12 star Ramesh Banda won bronze medal in singles category and he partnered with a player from Mauritius to win silver medal in doubles event.
In a third-place match, Ramesh beat Lucas of Mauritius 6-1,6-2. In doubles Ramesh and Lucas lost to a pair that consisted of a player from Botswana and Zimbabwe.
In girls section, Mwai Kadammanja and Linda Msiska los t in the semifinals of the under-14 doubles event 0-6 1-6. They lost to a team that had players from South Africa and Botswana.
Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTAM) executive member, Tadala Kandulu, said they were hoping for more medals during the second edition of the circuit.
“Of course, we could have done better, but two medals it’s not bad either. We hope the team will work hard during the second tournament,” she said.
Recently, Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL) donated K1.7 million to Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTAM) to help Ramesh prepare for the forthcoming ITF/CAT Masters tournament set for Morocco in September.
PIL general manager, Enwell Kadango, said the donation was meant to help Ramesh and his coach travel for ITF junior circuits set for Botswana.
Other players in the six-member squad include; Linda Msiska, Dereck Gamula, Gloria Christopher, Mwaiwathu Kadammanja and Anderson Kachepa.
