K1.3 million at stake in Be More race

A RECORD K1.3 million is set to be won by top athletes in the Standard Bank Be More race in Lilongwe, with over 300 runners confirming their participation.

Vice President Saulos Chilima and Lilongwe City Mayor Desmond Bikoko will also take part in the race which stretches from City Centre to Kumbali Village on the outskirts of the Capital City.

Standard Bank Head of Marketing, Thoko Unyolo, said all logistical arrangements have been finalised ahead of the historic race.

“As Standard Bank, we anticipate an exciting race which will offer the athletes great fun. We have received an overwhelming response from our customers and the athletes for this race. We expect nothing but excitement during the event,” Unyolo said.

She also thanked Lilongwe City Council for endorsing the race to take place in the city. On his part, Bikoko said apart from endorsing the race, he will be part of the 21km contest today.

“We have fully endorsed the race and we applaud the bank for the initiative. The race is important to the city and to all the athletes. I will take part in the race to support this great initiative,” Bikoko said.

The race has been split into three categories of 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers and 21 kilometers for both men and women.  Children above 12 years will also be allowed to compete. The race is aimed at bringing together customers, community, civic leaders and professional athletes.

Standard Bank is offering participants a chance to win fitness and healthy gear every week, with the grand prize being a Trojan Glide Cycle 220. A total of K6 million is up for grabs in prizes, in an event that has also involved the Athletics Association of Malawi.

The association’s General Secretary, Frank Chitembeya, thanked Standard Bank for coming up with the competition which he said will motivate athletes to continue training hard.

The second prize will be K825,000- with the thirdplaced runner waking away with K500,000. All the prizes apply to both male and female runners.
