Champions for the inaugural Fisd Challenge Cup will pocket K10 million, organisers, Football Association of Malawi (Fam), announced on Wednesday.

The amount is at par with prize money for most local elite competitions such as the Presidential and Carlsberg cups.

Second-placed team will receive K4 million and K1 million each for semi-finalists and regional champions. An annual budget for a modest top-flight team is K30 million.

The association made the announcement about the prize money ahead of the knock-out competition’s kick-off from the regional phase on September 17.

The new cup will involve 29 district champions (based on the Presidential Cup results) at the regional phase. The overall best teams, three each from the Southern and Central regions plus two from the North, will qualify for the national phase.

The regional finalists will be joined by their Super League counterparts on the national stage.

“The 16 TNM Super League teams will be drawn against each other with the top-eight teams from last season seeded. This phase will produce eight teams that will qualify for the national phase,” reads a statement on Fam’s website.

“The eight district teams and the eight Super league teams will now go into the national draw from round of 16 all the way to final.”

Fisd Limited Company is sponsoring the competition to the tune of K45 million after signing a five-year agreement with Fam. The cup will end in December.
