K10 million for stadium renovation

Mzuzu City Council (MCC) needs K10 million to renovate Mzuzu Stadium fence, the council’s Public Relations Officer, Karen Msiska, confirmed on Wednesday.

He said they need the money to install a wire mesh that demarcates the supporter’s stands from the playing field.

“We have observed that the stadium’s fence is vandalised each year. So, considering that we are spending more money maintaining it, we will replace it with a wielded mesh, which is quite stronger,” he said.

Part of the facility was vandalised during the 2016 season, hence the need for the renovations.

Msiska, however, said that he was unsure if the council will source the funds and renovate the facility before next season’s kick off in April.

Msiska added that the council will also install a razor wire along the dressing room passage to protect match officials.

“The maintenance will depend on the availability of money. We are challenged a bit [financially], so we will do it in phases. But if the K10 million can be sourced between now and April, then no doubt, come next football season, everything will be in place,” Msiska added.

Mzuni’s Coach, Alex Ngwira, whose team uses the stadium as a home ground, said pitch invasion compromises players’ safety.
