Volleyball Association of Malawi (Vam) has announced a K15 million package for the Malawi National Volleyball League.
Acting Vice General Secretary for the association, Twambilire Chalemba, said the official unveiling ceremony of the league’s sponsor is scheduled for November 19.
“We will start off with a tournament for teams from our regions on November 17 in Lilongwe. This tournament ends on November 20. To participate in the competition, teams should pay a K100,000 fee. Out of this amount, K30,000 is a non-refundable commitment fee and should be advanced.
“We expect all teams that will qualify for the national league to finish paying the K70,000 by end of April next year. This applies to both the ladies’ and men’s categories,” Chalemba said.
She said the league will have the biggest prizes of any volleyball competition in the history of the game in the country.
The winner will walk away with K3 million while the runners-up are assured of carting home K2 million, with the third-placed team pocketing K700,000.
The rest of the teams will receive consolation prizes of K30,000 each with individual prizes in most valuable player, best attacker, best setter, best receiver, best blocker and best defender categories.
Southern Region Volleyball League Chairperson Ambilike Mwaungulu hailed Vam for the initiative.
“We have been looking forward to this league for many years. As a region, we expect to benefit a lot from this league. Our counterparts in the Centre and North have been dominating the game for many years and this league will give us a chance to catch up with them.
“This league will give teams and players what they need, in terms of exposure, because there will be many games to be played. Our teams will certainly be in this league to prove a point,” Mwaungulu said.
