This year’s champion for Mdina International Chess tournament will pocket K300,000.
The three-day championship gets underway at Simama Hotel in Lilongwe on Friday with players from neighbouring countries, including Zambia, expected to light up the event.
Over 30 players are expected to battle for the championship, but the highlight is the return from suspension of Joseph Mwale and Joseph Nyambalo.
Mwale, who arrived from his South Africa base on Monday, has promised to display his tactics learnt in foreign land.
“I have played against several grandmasters and this has developed my game. I am thankful that several stakeholders discussed with Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) to have our bans cancelled,” he said.
South Africa-based entrepreneur, Tiwone Mdina, is sponsoring this year ’s championship at K1 million.
Mdina started sponsoring chess in 2009 then pegged at K800,000 and no player has defended the title.
