K700 000 up for grabs in volleyball

At least 30 teams will battle it out for K700, 000 in this year’s Jappie Mhango-sponsored Northern Region Volleyball League (NRVL).

Mhango, who is also Volleyball Association of Malawi (Vam) President, has hiked sponsorship from K500, 000.

The 2017 regional volleyball competition will roll into action on May 13.

NRVL Publicity Secretary, Catherine Nyamwela, said this year’s competition will attract 20 teams for males and 10 for females.

Last year, there were eight teams for the males and six for the females.

She said registration is open to all interested teams at a participation fee of K7, 000, whereas their female counterparts will pay K5, 000.

Registration, according to Nyamwela, closes on May 3.

“The number of teams has been increased to accommodate more clubs from the other districts. Last year, the majority of the teams were from around Mzuzu,” she said.

This year, all eyes will be on defending champions Moyale (male) and Mzuzu Academy (female) teams.

Moyale are eyeing a third consecutive title.

Traditionally, four best male teams and two for females qualify for the national finals.

Mhango, who is also the Minister of Transport and Public Works, said he hiked the sponsorship following concerns from teams over the prize money.

The 2016 winners received K60, 000 and K50, 000 in male and females’ categories, respectively.
