Ka Jive winners to perform at International Youth Day

Ka Jive Season Five winners Brightos alongside three other groups from Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa will today join other acts to showcase their talents at this year’s International Youth Day at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

Ka Jive is a popular dance competition driven by Times Group through Times Television.

The other three groups are Rwandan Traditional Dance Group, Kasai and Kay Extra.

John Kazadi, who is leading the Dzaleka groups, said they were excited to perform at this year’s International Youth Day.

“Although we live at the camp, we are part of the world hence we are happy to be included in this huge event,” Kazadi, who is the founder of Makasi Arts Festival, said.

One of the organisers of the event, Hasting Banda, said all was set for the commemoration.

“As young people we have been complaining that we are being sidelined in different activities, so, this day is for us to celebrate our existence and our contribution to the country,” Banda said.

Apart from music, traditional dances and other artistic disciplines, there will also be football and netball matches.

Youthwave Malawi is one of the organisations involved in the event and they have since connected with Poetry Association of Malawi (Pam) which will feature 10 poets.

International Youth Day is an awareness day designated by United Nations. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. The first International Youth Day was observed on August 12 2000.
