Itumeleng Khune was not included in the Kaizer Chiefs squad on Wednesday night despite indications that he was fully fit ahead of the 2019/20 season restart.

The South African Premier Soccer League leaders played to a 1-1 draw against Bidvest Wits at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg with Amakhosi returning to football action unchanged between the sticks.

Daniel Akpeyi, who’s established himself as Amakhosi’s number one, featured for the full encounter, with Bruce Bvuma being named on the bench.

Speaking to the media after the game, Chiefs Head Coach Ernst Middendorp explained that Khune’s absence from the squad was not due to injury, but because he had missed a few training sessions over the past few weeks for reasons unstated.

“He missed some training sessions for different reasons in terms of having a challenge, I don’t want to put too much in, we are not discussing any injuries, during the entire time we haven’t spoken about any injury.

“It is simple and easy, there were a number of training days where he couldn’t make it and good, you decide and today it was Daniel Akpeyi and Bruce and let’s move forward to the next game,” Middendorp explained.
