Malawi national football team goalkeeper, Ernest Kakhobwe, has apologised to the nation following his costly blunder that gifted Zambia a Cosafa Cup semi-final slot in South Africa on Sunday evening.
“I am equally at pains following the incident. It was not my intention to miss the ball. If you can look closely at the ball, it hit a bump and changed direction as I was about to kick it. As such, I missed it as I was also in motion. I know the nation is at pains so am I. Let us forget the mistake and learn the lessons,” the goalie said in a WhatsApp voice note.Advertisement
The Nyasa Big Bullets shot-stopper said it was time to move on and focus on the remaining games at the tournament in Durban.
The Flames met Comoros Tuesday in a Plate Section semi-final.
Kakhobwe missed a back pass from left-back Precious Sambani to hand Zambia an equalising goal in the 89th minute in a quarter-final game that ended 2-2 to pave the way for post-match penalty shootout which the Chipolopolo won 4-2.
Malawi were, then, leading following goals from Gabadinho Mhango and Gerald Phiri Junior before Zambia responded through Austin Muwowo and Emmanuel Chabula.
During the penalty shootouts, Phiri and Stanley Sanudi scored for Malawi while Sambani and Chawanangwa Kawonga missed.
