Kallisto Pasuwa signs short-term deal

TNM Super League leaders Nyasa Big Bullets have finally signed Zimbabwean coach Kallisto Pasuwa on a two-and-a-half-month contract with the target of winning the league title.

The development comes at a time when a section of Bullets supporters was calling for the return of fired coaches Rodgers Yasini and Eliya Kananji.

The supporters staged a demonstration when the team struggled to boot out Nchalo United 2-1 in a Fisd Challenge Cup tie on Thursday.

Pasuwa was unveiled yesterday at Nyasa Manufacturing Company headquarters in Blantyre.

“I have taken the risk and it is possible to turn around the team’s fortunes if all stakeholders work together. Building a team is a process but if we are all committed, it will not take time.

“I know two months is not a long period but it is a risk which I am taking. I faced a similar situation at Dynamos where I was offered a two-month contract but we won the league and I was offered a year-long deal,” he said.

Pasuwa will, in the short term, work jointly with the current technical panel but will be allowed to appoint an assistant coach if he signs a long-term contract.

Following Pasuwa’s appointment, Heston Munthali has reverted to his role as strikers’ trainer with James Chilapondwa returning to the Team Manager’s role. Swadick Sanudi will still operate as the goalkeepers’ trainer.

“I will rely on the current members of the technical panel to solve the teams’ woes,” Pasuwa said.

Bullets Chief Executive Officer, Fleetwood Haiya, explained that Pasuwa has been tasked to win the league following recommendations from the board.

“Let me thank the board for bringing us an expatriate coach. We have spent a fortune to bring him here. His main target is to help us win the league. We have not given him the Fisd Challenge Cup as a priority but it will be up to him to lift the cup and win the hearts of supporters who are disappointed with our recent failure to grab the Airtel Top 8 and Carlsberg cups,” Haiya said.

Technical Director Malinda Chinyama and board member and Acting Administration and Marketing Director Albert Chigoga were present during the ceremony.

Pasuwa is expected to lead Bullets for the first time when the People’s Team date Dwangwa United in a league game Sunday.

The former Zimbabwe national team trainer has replaced Yasini and Kananji who were fired after the team failed to win Airtel Top 8 and Carlsberg cup.
