TNM Super League defending champions Kamuzu Barracks (KB) suffered a demoralizing 0-1 defeat to Nyasa Big Bullets at Kalulu Stadium in Nchalo, Chikwawa District yesterday.
Defender Maneno Nyoni was the unlikely scorer of the goal as Bullets strikers continue to struggle to find the net despite the addition of Chiukepo Msowoya and Nelson Kangunje. The win pushed Bullets to 15 points from nine games whereas KB are eighth with 11 points.
KB dominated the early stages of the match and were always first on the ball. However, the soldiers were unable to make their dominance count as they missed clear cut chances. Bullets eventually responded in fine fashion when Nyoni rose high to head home a well-curved freekick from Dalitso Sailesi in the 20th minute.
From that moment, the game opened up with both teams hunting for goals. Bullets central midfielders Chimango Kayira and Kangunje struggled to control the game as their counterparts, Dan Ziba and Gift Mbwana, dictated matters. KB striker Kelvin Hanganda could have equalised at the dot of half time but his connection from a Harvey Mkacha cut back missed the upright. In the second half, both teams panicked unnecessarily at times as they searched for goals.
Bullets had several chances to wrap up the game but the likes of Sailesi, substitute Mike Mkwate and Yamikani Fodya failed to convert.
Former Bullets forward, Komani Msiska, had a chance to level the score but goalkeeper Ernest Kakhobwe was alert to avert danger. Bullets Assistant Coach, Elia Kananji, described the win as crucial in the team’s re-launch of title aspirations.
“We are slowly but steadily rediscovering our form and this is good. But we still need to do more ,” Kananji said.
KB Team Manager, Francis Shaba, said his team let the game slip through its fingers. “We should have done better but this is not the end of the road. Congratulations to Bullets for the win. The referees started badly but improved as the game progressed,” he said.
In other matches, Moyale came from behind to collect maximum points at Mulanje Park Stadium with a 2-1 win over Premier Bet Wizards. Wizards scored first through Misheck Botomani but Moyale equalised through Khuda Muyaba before Charles Chilembo netted the winning goal.
Civil Sporting Club continued with their good form as they hammered rookies Chitipa United 4-2 at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe. Raphael Phiri was the hero of the day as he secured a hat-trick before Joseph Kachule scored the fourth.
Chitipa netted through Abel Mwakilama and Khumbo Banda. Games continue today as follows: Azam Tigers v Moyale at Kalulu Blue Eagles v Chitipa United at Nankhaka Silver Strikers v Masters Security at Civo Be Forward Wanderers v Red Lions at Balaka Blantyre United v Kamuzu Barracks at MDC.
