Kamuzu Barracks holds sports festival

GETTING READY—Athletes on the track

Kamuzu Barracks soldiers took off their busy schedule as they participated in an inter-company sports festival at Bingu National Stadium on Friday.

The event was organised as part of preparations for the 2022 Malawi Defence Force (MDF) sports festival slated for next month at Malawi Armed Forces College (Mafco) in Salima District.

The soldiers competed in sporting codes including football, volleyball and basketball.

At the end of the day, A Company emerged champions in football followed by C Company whereas Support Company and B Company came third and fourth, respectively.

In basketball, A Company also finished as champions whereas B Company came second. C Company finished third followed by Headquarters.

Support Company emerged champions in tug of war whereas headquarters came second followed by B Company and A Company on position three and four, respectively.

Renowned boxer Anisha Basheel won the 100m and 800m races whereas Vanessa Mbanje and Immaculate Moloko came second and third, respectively.

Efrida Kalumbi emerged champion in 10,000m race whereas Deborah Lazalo came second. Golden Gunde was the champion in 100m and 400m.

Commanding Officer for 2MR Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Mambo said the aim of the event was to prepare the soldiers ahead of the main sports festival.

“We want to prepare athletes ahead of the games. We want to grab all trophies during the main event. We will not relax and will continue preparing for the games,” Mambo said.

Vanguard, Standard Bank and Msilikali Sacco were some of the sponsors of the event.
