Kamuzu Barracks, Nyasa Big Bullets Reserve through


Kamuzu Barracks and Nyasa Big Bullets Reserve booked quarterfinals berth in the FDH Bank Cup after winning their round of 16 respective matches Sunday.

The soldiers dumped rivals Civil Service United out of the tournament following a 1-0 victory at Nankhaka Stadium thanks to Matias Nyirenda’s goal in the 33rd minute.

The match lived up to its expectations as both teams displayed good football.


Christopher Kumwembe had the best chance for Civil but he shot straight into the palms of KB goalkeeper Leman Nthala.

KB also missed some good chances through Zeliat Nkhoma.

Civil Coach Franco Ndawa rued missed chances.


“A very painful defeat because we created so many chances but we failed to utilise them,” Ndawa said.

KB mentor Charles Kamanga said his charges played according to instructions.

“We faced a very good team and my players showed great character. Our focus is on the quarterfinals,” Kamanga said.

KB midfielder Patrick Banda was named man-of-the-match.

At Balaka Stadium, Bullets Reserve caused another upset after knocking out Super League side Red Lions 1-0.

Chikumbutso Salima netted the only goal of the match from the penalty spot in the 66th minute.

Bullets Reserve also knocked Mighty Wakawaka Tigers out in the round of 32.

KB and Bullets Reserve join Changalume Barracks, Chitipa United and Extreme FC in the quarterfinals of the competition.

Lions Coach Mike Kumanga admitted that it was a bad day for the soldiers.

“We were second on the ball for the better part of the match as Bullets Reserve played well,” Kumanga said.

Bullets Reserve Coach Enos Chatama said the players performed beyond his expectations.

“It was a very difficult match. Red Lions came hard on us in the first half but we contained them and we got the vital goal,” Chatama said.

Emanuel Saviel was voted as man-of-the-match.

The quarterfinals set will be completed next week with potentially mouth-watering round of 16 fixtures.

Nyasa Big Bullets will host Moyale Barracks at Kamuzu Stadium whereas Mighty Mukuru Wanderers will face Dedza Dynamos at Dedza Stadium on Sunday.

Ekwendeni Hammers will meet Blue Eagles in the round of 16 match.
