Kamuzu’s interpreter Nyemba Mbekeani dies

ONE of the country’s freedom fighters, ex-diplomats and prominent businesspersons Nyemba Mbekeani died yesterday at the Blantyre Adventist Hospital.

According to son to the deceased, George, Mbekeani, 86, succumbed to pneumonia in the wee hours of Wednesday after a short illness.

“My dad was a freedom fighter who founded a political wing, Ndirande Welfare Club. His death has come like a shock, especially when we have just lost my mum four weeks ago. I should thank the doctors at the Blantyre Adventist Hospital for trying to save his life. God thought otherwise,” George said.

Mbekeani’s body is expected to lie in state at his Maone residence in Blantyre on Friday while burial has been scheduled for Saturday at HHI Cemetery in the city.

The late Mbekeani, among other high portfolios, worked as Malawi’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in 1964, Ambassador to United Nations and United States in 1968, Ambassador to Ethiopia in 1972 before coming home.

He also served as the first Malawian General Manager at Malawi Housing Corporation in 1971.

Mbekeani also worked as Town Clerk at Blantyre Town Council, General Manager at Nyasaland Times now Blantyre Newspapers and Bookers Malawi (Kandondo) before founding his own Nkulumadzi Farm Bakery. He is survived by five children and many grandchildren.
