TNM Super League returnees Karonga United have embarked on a hunt for a head coach, with Civil Sporting’s assistant mentor, Oscar Kaunda, and Fish Eagles’ Head coach, Christopher Nyambose, as leading candidates.
Karonga’s current Head Coach, Dave Muyombe, is underqualified as per Football Association of Malawi’s (Fam) Club Licensing requirements of a minimum Caf B licence for a Super League Coach.
The team’s Chairperson, Alufeyo Chipanga, said he has received numerous applications for the post.
“We have already started talking to them and it is up to them to decide on whether they are interested [in the job] or not. I believe they are the right choices for us. We need to finalise the matter as soon as we can so that we commence preparations for the Super League in good time,” Chipanga said.
He said his team would like to have five players with Super League experience to add depth to the current squad.
Chipanga further said the Crocodiles are contemplating luring back their former players Hygiene Mwandepeka and Maneno Nyoni from Silver Strikers and Nyasa Big Bullets, respectively.
The two defenders joined the giants at the start of this season following Karonga’s relegation from the elite league.
But they have both struggled to break into the starting line-ups at their respective teams.
“If their current clubs will allow them to leave, they will surely be most welcome. Their experience can have a huge bearing on our return to the Super League,” Chipanga added.
Kaunda was in charge of the lakeshore-based side towards the end of last season, but was unable to save it from relegation.
He could not be reached for a comment as he did not pick his mobile phone after several attempts.
