Karonga United missed an opportunity to move out of the relegation zone after they were held 1-1 by Premier Bet Wizards in a TNM Super League’s survival battle at Mzuzu Stadium on Sunday.

In a post-match interview, Karonga’s Coach, Kondwani Mwalweni, could not hide his frustration with the result.

“I f you were watching the game, you can agree with me that the referee was one-sided. She made one or two bad decisions that cost us a victory. Otherwise, my team played well. We deserved to win and I believe that those wins will come our way in subsequent [league] matches,” he said.

Karonga remain on position 14 with 18 points from 20 games, while Wizards are above them with 19 points, level with Civo United from the same number of games.

Wizards’ Technical Director, Peter Mponda, was satisfied with the away point.

“We didn’t play our usual [passing] game today because we were feeling the pressure since we did not want to lose the match,” Mponda said.

“I think Karonga United were the ones who desperately needed victory than us because they were at their own backyard. It is a good point for us considering that we were playing away from home.”

Karonga took an early lead courtesy of defender Hygiene Mwandepeka’s free-kick from 35 metres, just 10 minutes into the game.

But Wizards’ second-half substitute, Hendrix Misinde, equalised in the 80th minute to deny Karonga their fifth league win of the season.
