Karonga United, Kaporo Stars merge

After failing to withstand the heat in the 2016 TNM Super League, relegated Karonga United have merged with Kaporo Stars of the Northern Region Football Association’s Premier Division.

Kaporo were in a neck-and-neck contest for the region’s division title, but eventually, Chitipa United earned Super League promotion.

Karonga Chairperson, Alufeyo Chipanga, who also owns Kaporo, said a resolution was made during a meeting on Sunday to merge the two sides.

Ironically, the new team still carries the name Karonga United.

“We would like to have one strong team to represent Karonga in next year’s Super League. We have already started preparing for the Simama Northern Region Football league. We will win it and return to the Super League,” Chipanga explained.

Chipanga stated that the new team will have a deep squad with the capacity to win the division’s championship.

“We know for sure that players such as Khumbo Msowoya and Hygiene Mwendepeka will no longer be part of our team in the new season. Several teams are desperately looking for them. So, we are prepared for life without such players,” Chipanga said.

Karonga were relegated from the Super League after finishing third from bottom with 27 points.
