Karonga United target 3 more wins

Newly hired Karonga United’s Assistant Coach, Oscar Kaunda, has challenged his charges to win three of the remaining seven TNM Super League games if they are to be assured of survival.

Kaunda said this after witnessing his side producing a masterclass performance at Mzuzu Stadium Sunday to upset Blue Eagles 2-1.

The home side went into this encounter in desperate search for a win to keep their league survival bid alive.

The hosts took an early lead through Khumbo Msowoya after nine minutes.

Victor Nyirenda replied three minutes later for the visitors, but Msowoya struck again in the 56th minute from the penalty spot after Benard Msiska was obstructed inside the box by Eagles’ Steve Chigona.

Kaunda was in charge of Karonga in the abscence of Head Coach, Kondwani Mwalweni, who was reportedly attending a funeral.

“The day I arrived at this club, I told everyone that we need 12 points to survive relegation. Now that we have won this game, we are looking forward to winning three more and we will be safe,” Kaunda said.

“I trust my boys and I know they will make it. If they continue working hard as we have done today, we will be on the safe side come the end of the season.”

His Eagles’ counterpart, Msakakuona, downplayed the defeat, saying he will not give up on the title until the final day.

“We have lost yes, I have accepted, but I will continue fighting for the league title until December 31,” he said.
