Moyale Barracks fired blanks as they surrendered to Kamuzu Barracks 1-0 in the fight for the 2017 Fisd Challenge Cup before a near capacity crowd at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe yesterday.
Manase Chiyesa pulled the decisive trigger in the 35th minute to help his side lift the cup after failing to do so at the last hurdle last year when they lost 4-3 on post-match penalties to eventual winners Be Forward Wanderers at the same venue.
This is certainly a consolation for the Lilongwe-based soldiers after their failure to defend the TNM Super League title.
For winning the cup, KB pocketed K12 million plus a trophy whereas Moyale got K5 million.
It was a cup final that divided the Malawi Defence Force family for at least 90 minutes. But at the end of the day, KB prevailed after a solid display throughout the game.
After the final whistle, KB turned Civo Stadium into a parade ground whereas Moyale tumbled to the turf.
KB exposed Moyale’s defence on several occasions as Chiyesa, Harvey Nkacha, Davie Banda and Kelvin Hanganda led the onslaught on their fellow soldiers.
Moyale goalkeeper, Macdonald Hararwa, produced a wonderful performance to deny Diof Simaone and Sam Chiponda.
On the other hand, the Moyale’s striking duo of Khuda Muyaba and Deus Nkutu was caged by Pempho Kamsichiri and Sam Chibvunde for the better part of the game.
Muyaba and Nkutu kept dilly-dallying in front of goal as if afraid of stepping on landmines. KB fought hard to successfully defend their slender until full time to beat their compatriots for the second time in a cup final.
KB Head Coach, Billy Phambala, applauded his charges for sticking to their game plan.
“I am very happy with the way my boys played. Our plan was to score in the first half and we did it,” Phambala said.
His Moyale counterpart, Nicholas Mhango, accepted defeat and congratulated KB for the win.
“It was a bad performance from my players in the first half. We tried in the second half but it was not our day. Congratulations tob KB,” Mhango said.
