Kefasi in debut album launch

IN OWN SHOW – Kefasi performs at Music against Malaria Festival last Saturday

Having enjoyed some performances with the recent one being at the Music against Malaria Festival held at College of Medicine Complex in Blantyre last Saturday, musician Kefasi makes a huge step on Sunday as he launches his debut album Kaluma’ako at Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC).

The singer and guitarist says he has worked hard to put the project together.

“Finally, the time is here. God has been faithful and so I am looking forward to the best. I just want to call upon people to come in large numbers and be part of the launch,” Kefasi said.

Kefasi’s real name is Peter Kanjunju but he adopted the name Kefasi because he apparently wanted a name that could sound better in the musical circles.

“I think I was not comfortable using the name Peter in music and so I decided to look for a marketable name and that is where the name Kefasi came in. Actually, this name comes from the name Peter which is Kefasi in Aramaic,” he said.

A teacher at Namikasi Secondary School, Kefasi will be coming face to face with Agorosso, also from the Shire Valley and John Fire during the launch.

Kefasi’s music background dates back to the time he used to sing in a church choir at Jesus Love of God.

“My late father was a bishop and I used to sing in a church choir. I was doing voices and through hard work and observation, I ended up learning the bass guitar which I used to play. I also play the acoustic guitar which I learnt through observation as well,” he said.

With his Panamwendo Band, Kefasi recorded his album at Sound Room in Blantyre with Jew Kapengule.

The 11-track album has songs such as ‘Chenjera’, ‘Ali Yemweyo’, ‘Palibe Kopita’, and ‘Iwe Mwana’.
