Kenya based youngster lined for Flames call-up

Meck Mwase

Malawi national football team head coach Meck Mwase has disclosed that he would include Kenyan based youthful attacker Andrew Malisero in the senior side call-up.

Malisero has made headlines after joining Kenyan Premier League side Gor Mahia on a three-year deal-becoming the first Malawian to play for the team.

Mwase said having worked with Malisero in 2018 during the Cosafa Under-20 Championship time was ripe to try the youngster at senior level.

“He was one of my players when I was coaching the under 20 side. At the tournament he also scored for us. I was excited when I heard that he had signed for Gor Mahia. I think he can fit into our [Flames] system. It is time to try him at the senior level,” he said.

However, Mwase said he was keeping fingers crossed if Gor Mahia would release Malisero for the forthcoming national team assignments.

Mwase is expected to call players into camp ahead of next month’s Cosafa Cup scheduled for Durban, South Africa. Flames will then face Burkina Faso in 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Ouagadougou on November 9 and play the return match on November 17

Meanwhile, Malisero said he would be happy to be included in the senior side although it will be a daunting task to break into the team.

“I talked with the coach [Mwase] last week and he indicated that I might be included in the squad. He explained everything that at the moment football is on suspension due to the pandemic. I have played under Mwase before at under-20 so I will be ready for the challenge,” he said.

Malisero become the third foreigner to be unveiled at Gor Mahia in the current transfer window after Betrand Konfor and Tito Okello.

“Andrew can play both as an attacking midfielder and striker will provide much needed attacking options to the team,” reported on Thursday.

Malisero joined Mahia from African Warriors of South Africa.
