Visiting Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) men’s and ladies teams showed no mercy when they mercilessly crashed Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) sides during international friendlies on Saturday.

The visitors’ performance underlined their class in terms of technical ability, fitness and game plan, giving Malawian teams food for thought.

KPA Men’s side beat Crazy Warriors 87-31 and also outrun Poly and Bricks Select 80-40.

KPA Ladies humbled Kukoma Eagles 106-25 and then Cobbe 80-32. KPA Ladies also overpowered Mikoko Mystics 82-22.

Basketball Association of Malawi Director of Marketing and Resource Mobilisation Blena Chisenga said the games were an eye opener for the teams.

“They have seen the level of seriousness from the opponents and this will help change the way we play basketball in Malawi. We have also been blessed with a referees’ clinic organised by the KPA technical team. This will greatly improve the games officiating,” he said.

KPA Leader of Delegation Ambrose Kisoi said they did not read into the scores too much.

We came here to prepare for an international tournament. So far so good. Malawian teams have been wonderful and they have huge potential,” he said.

KPA will also meet Sozobal All Stars before travelling to Lilongwe to take on Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) sides in a tournament.
