Keta Mulwafu, Margaret Mkwanda dominate Captains’ golf

KetaMulwafu and Margaret Mkwanda dominated this year’s Blantyre Sports Club’s Captain’s Prize tournament on Saturday.

In the men’s section, Mulwafu, playing off handicap 17, scored 39 points to emerge the champion whereas, Steven Chisale, playing off handicap 16, was second with 38 points.

Gift Gondwe, playing off handicap 19, finished on third position with 36 points.

In the ladies’ category, senior golfer, Mkwanda, playing off handicap 30, scored 40 points to get the championship.

Zita Rodrick, playing off handicap 36, ended on second position with 30 points whereas, Harriet Marian, playing off handicap 25, finished on third position.

Mkwanda said the tournament was well-organised.

“Since I started taking part in the Captain’s Prize tournament, there has never been a tournament as good as this one,” she said.

In the individual category, Roza Mbilizi hit the longest drive on hole 13 in the ladies’ section while Doreen Kavala won the nearest to-the pin hole for 12.

In the juniors’ category, Priscilla Fiwa hit nearest-to-the pin on hole 14.

In the men’s individual section, Donbell Mandala scored nearest-to-the-pin on hole five whereas Medson Kalambule hit the longest drive on the 10th.

The tournament was organised in honour of previous captains, Webster Kaunga (men) and Connie Muguvu-Karuku (ladies), after their terms ended.

Kaunga and Karuku paid tribute to the sponsors that supported golf during their tenure and advised the new Sam Mwale-led committee to stick to the strategic plan which is in place.
