Keturah makes first international outing

To record album in USA

Renowned musician Keturah, better known as Local Girl for her local music left the country on Sunday for United States of America (USA) through Chileka International Airport in Blantyre and will, for two weeks record her album at Hen House in Los Angeles.

This is Keturah’s first international trip since she started her music and she has since received numerous congratulatory messages on social media after Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) Director Luc Deschamps posted the news on his Facebook page.

Deschamps said when Keturah told his wife Marie Da Silva, who is the founder of Jacaranda School for Orphans in Blantyre and him that she was looking for different sound and new ideas for her album, they decided to help.

“We sent her songs to our friend, Grammy-nominated producer Harlan Steinberger, who owns state-of-the-art recording studio Hen House. Harlan loved Keturah’s music and offered to record her album for free with world famous Playing For Change Band as her back up,” he said.

Deschamps, who is also French Honorary Consul and brains behind Mr Luc’s libraries, said they were thrilled at JCC and Maison de la France to support one of the great talents of Malawi.

“She has six songs ready and the beauty with her is that she writes her own songs and dictates what she wants.

“We reached out to Harlan Steinberger because he is experienced in authentic music, he is one of the best producers and we have been there and seen the state-of-the-art studio,” he said.

Deschamps said Harlan is their longtime friend and board member of Jacaranda Foundation and that he has recorded artists such as legendary Willie Nelson.

“We have sent several songs of our local artists but he was impressed with Keturah’s songs. We cannot wait to hear the new music from Keturah, whose music is rooted in traditional sounds and dances of Malawi. We know there are good studios in the country but she just wants a different environment and this will also help, in terms of exposure, and its even interesting for her as she will be working with Playing For Change Band. She will also record a live performance with the band,” he said.

The development is good news for Keturah’s music career and augurs well with her song ‘Chimbalame’, where she sings beautifully that she is a bird and that she will fly higher.

The creator of ‘Nambewe’ left the country barely two days after she performed and interacted with French senators at JCC alongside other creatives as part of pitching and marketing their work.

Meanwhile, one of the talented videographers in the country Vinny Visuals, real name Vincent Kamlanje, is also in USA for a creative camp.

Vinny Visuals has been invited by Magic Fingers Entertainment for an afro-beat music camp and film production which is being hosted in Atlanta, Georgia.

“So far, everything is going on well and I have a couple of projects on my plate,” he said yesterday.
