Khumbo Kachali wants donor community intervention

By Rebecca Chimjeka:

Former State vice president, Khumbo Kachali, has said President Peter Mutharika’s failure to substantiate claims that some politicians tried to engage international terrorist group Al-Shabaab to cause anarchy in Malawi was an indication that Mutharika was lying.

On Saturday, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president, Lazarus Chakwera, gave Mutharika 24 hours to provide evidence on the allegation that two politicians wanted to recruit mercenary militias from Al-Shabaab and Congo war zone to cause disorder in Malawi.

At a press conference in Lilongwe Tuesday, Kachali —alongside MCP secretary general (SG) Eisenhower Mkaka, People’s Party (PP) SG Ibrahim Matola and other senior officials—described what Mutharika said in his State of the Nation Address as “another Tippex lie”.

“The 24-hour ultimatum expired on Sunday, June 23 2019. Today, we are 48 hours outside the ultimatum period without anything concrete from the leader of DPP [Democratic Progressive Party]. This makes us to conclude that it was another tippex lie from a Tippex President who has Tippexed his way into State House,” the Freedom Party president said.

Kachali said if, indeed, it were true that there were Al Shabaab activities in Malawi, security agencies, of which Mutharika is their Commander-in-Chief, would have opened a file.

Kachali called upon development partners and diplomatic missions to ask Mutharika for a file on Al- Shabaab as this is an international terrorist group.

Kachali has condemned what he called a new wave of terror to be perpetrated by alleged DPP supporters on those perceived as having given MCP entry into what the governing party considered its stronghold.

He cited MCP campaign director Moses Kunkuyu and Chikwawa Nkombezi MP Abida Mia as among the said targets.

Presidential spokesperson, Mgeme Kalilani, Tuesday maintained what he said on Saturday.

“If the individuals are not in the wrong, they have nothing to worry or panic about. I repeat, why are they panicking over this issue if they are not suspects? Tell them to keep calm and wait for what investigating agencies will decide on the matter,” Kalilani said.
