Kinnah returning home after sacking

Kinnah Phiri has confirmed that he has been fired as Free State Stars’ head coach following three straight defeats in the South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL).

“We recruited a lot of young players in the pre-season and the team was taking time to gel.Management felt they needed someone and I accepted,”Kinnah explained in a telephone interview on Friday afternoon.

“I will be coming back home. That is not a problem for me. I have to get a new job. I am not returning to Big Bullets. No. I need a breather first before looking for a job whether in Malawi or outside.”

Kinnah, in his third stint with the PSL side, joined last season as an assistant coach then rose to the helm to save the team from relegation following the sacking of Belgian Tom Saintfiet.

Free State Stars have since replaced Kinnah with former Bloemfontein Celtic trainer, Ernst Middendorp.

Kinnah was sacked as Flames coach in January 2013 having been hired in 2008 and during his four years at the helm steered Malawi to 2010 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Angola.
