Krishna Achuthan back at Ham

Seasoned sports administrator, Krishna Achuthan, has returned to Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) as interim Vice-President to replace the late Dean Pinto.

After serving as general secretary for about 30 years, Achuthan was out of the hockey set-up for three years after losing his position to Wanthaza Mughogho, but the latter resigned a year due to work commitments.

Ham General Secretary, Chigo Thindwa, confirmed that the association incorporated Achuthan because of his vast experience in the sport.

“He is a respected sports administrator who has been involved in hockey for decades as general secretary. He brings that wealth of experience to Ham and we hope he can make a big contribution just like the late Pinto,” he said.

Thindwa added that Achuthan would be confirmed during Ham’s Annual General Meeting in July.

Achuthan said he was humbled to be back to the sport he had dedicated his life to.

“It is a service that I cherish. My priority will be to see the National Hockey Stadium Project making good progress this year. The project is my brainchild and I want to see it come to pass,” he said.

Achuthan added that he would ensure that all hockey committees are active.

“We have already held courses for administrators. We have currently asked the development committee to come up with short-term and long-term programmes and submit budgets so that we could see how to develop the sport,” he said.

With Ham President Tochi Gill outside the country for long, Achuthan is now Ham’s acting-president.
