Local netball giants Kukoma Diamonds have offered to help banned Karonga Queens goal defender, Abigail Mwafulirwa, appeal her sentence and return to competitive netball.
Mwafulirwa was banned from taking part in any netball activity for 25 years following violent incidents that marred the Presidential Cup netball regional finals in Mzuzu early this year.
Kukoma Chairperson, Lumbani Ntonyo, said they wanted the player to be part of their squad in the new season.
“We are discussing with her if she can appeal the ban. Much as we do not condone indiscipline, we feel the sentence was excessive,” Ntonyo said.
She said the player was yet to make a decision on the issue.
“We can offer legal direction. Punishments should not be aimed at killing players’ careers. There are better ways of penalising those that break the law other than giving them harsh punishments,” Ntonyo said.
Mwafulirwa, who earlier indicated that she would not appeal, refused to comment on Diamonds’ plans.
Initially, the player was fined K20,000 but the verdict was changed to a 25-year ban following an appeal by her team.
Diamonds are also chasing Karonga’s Eddah Muyombe, who is regarded as one of the Northern Region team’s promising shooters.
The transfer will likely go through after next month when the six-month transfer ban imposed on Karonga for the violence ends.
