Netball giants, Diamonds opened a new chapter after securing K4.5 million sponsorship from Capital Oil Refining Industry (Cori); manufacturers of Kukoma cooking oil.
The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday at Victoria Hotel in Blantyre as Kukoma Diamonds marked a new start after being without a sponsor since 2010.
The partnership was revealed four months ago, but it took time before vital aspects of the MoU were put together and agreed.
Cori sales and marketing manager, Felex Cheza, said they were delighted to sponsor Kukoma Diamonds on a year-long deal.
Cheza said depending on the team’s success, Cori through its brand, Kukoma, was willing to continue supporting the team.
“This is just a start. We want a win-win situation. As a winning and leading brand, we want Diamonds to maintain our standards,” he said.
Cheza also clarified that K3 million would cater for players’ allowances and game –bonuses, whereas K1.5 million was for promotions and logistics.
Diamonds general secretary, Alice Kumilonde, said the sponsorship had marked the rebirth of the giant.
“This has been possible due to the timely sponsorship from Capital Oil Refining Industry, manufacturers of the famous Kukoma cooking oil,” She said.
Kumilonde said the sponsorship would make a difference and assured Cori that the team would tirelessly work hard to promote Kukoma brand.
Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) general secretary, Carol Bapu, Southern Region Netball League chairperson, Khungekile Matiya and guest of honour, Leonidas Kavalo from the Malawi National Council of Sports, similarly asked Diamonds to cherish the sponsorship.
