Simba Hockey Ladies Team has breathed a sigh of relief after securing support from Capital Oil Refining Industries (Cori) to travel to Zambia for international friendly matches.
Simba Captain, Trinity Chilembwe, said they were excited to secure the funds for the trip to Zambia.
“The support has come at the right time when we were about to give up. They have given us enough money to cater for our transportation. We have since hired a minibus and we are set to leave on Thursday,” she said.
Simba, who made their debut on the international scene when they travelled to Zimbabwe for friendlies, are expected to play four games in Zambia.
“The games are very important because we need to gain international exposure for the game to develop in the country [Malawi]. Our counterparts are a bit advanced because they usually compete in international games. We also need to compete in such games to gain ground,” Chilembwe said.
She also said they were set to finalise discussions with Cori, who are manufacturers of Kukoma cooling oil, to become the team’s official sponsors.
Simba has been without a sponsor for a year after severing ties with College of Medicine Sports Complex.
Cori Sponsorship Coordinator, Violet Kapolo, said the company, through its Kukoma brand, realises the role sports play in the country’s development.
“Sports help build the nation because healthy and active people are always productive. This is why we always associate our product [Kukoma], which is fortified with vitamins, with sporting activities and individuals. We also decided to support Simba because our bosses, Ameen and Shirazi Karim, used to play hockey in their heydays,” she said.
Kukoma sponsors netball outfit Kukoma Diamonds and sport codes such as cricket and body-building.
