Kukoma’s duo misses Rainbow netball opener
Kukoma Diamonds have played down the absence of key players, Caroline Mtukule-Ngwira and Wezzie Mzembe-Msiska, when the giants started their Rainbow Paints Southern Region Netball League campaign brightly on Saturday.
Despite missing the two key defensive players, Diamonds easily swept past Shizaella 85-9 at Blantyre Youth Centre on Saturday.
Diamonds are bidding to reclaim the championship they let go last season.
Diamonds assistant coach, Noel Mussa, said they selected players depending on several factors.
“We picked our strongest team at the moment. The two were not in our game-plan because they are not fit enough to play,” he said.
In other matches, Prison Sisters beat Chilomoni Sisters 65-25 while Gerald Tasaukadala humbled Young Professionals 48-17.
Prison assistant coach, Pemphero Ntalika, said they were also excited by their start to the league.
“It is always good to win your opening game to gather momentum,” he said.
The match between defending champions, Tigresses and Alliance Capital Stars, was postponed after the latter contributed five players to the Malawi Under-21 side.
The league’s General Secretary, Annie Hanjahanja, said the performance of the teams was promising.
“It shows that teams were hungry for action. We are looking forward to an exciting season,” she said.
