Kukoma Eagles have won the Southern Zone Basketbal l League (Sozobal) Ladies’ Division championship in their maiden season after overcoming defending champions Mikoko Mystics 2-0 in best-of-three series played at Blantyre Youth Centre.
Eagles beat Mikoko 57- 37 on Friday then 70-32 the following day to wrap up the title before going to game three, a development that excited the new champions’ vice captain Sekai Mponda.
“It is still unbelievable for us. We didn’t know what to expect when we entered the championship as we were up against established teams. This is a huge achievement for us,” Mponda said.
She attributed their success to teamwork and hard work in training.
Eagles’ squad comprises net ballers such as Tigresses’ Beatrice Mpinganjira, who is the captain, Tendai Masamba, Olyca Kambuwa (Serenity Stars), Annabel Phiri (KukomaDiamonds), Emily Jere (Thunder Queens) and Eve Kazembe (Tigresses).
Other Eagles players are Memory Mbewe, Patricia Mpinganjira, Natasha Makawa, LomaPhoya and Vanessa Mduliro.
Renowned basketball veteran coach, Blair Phiri, leads Eagles whereas Ronald Mbekeani is team manager. Rachel Makawa is Secretary.
Meanwhile, the team’s Public Relations Officer, Miranda Dula, has said the season was tough but they were equal to the task.
