Kuwait Redcrissent Center has on Wednesday made a donation worth $20, 000 (about K17 million) to Muslims in Balaka, Machinga, Mangochi and Zomba.
The donation, which saw the Muslims receiving food items, was done in awareness of the Ramadan period through the assistance of Malawi Red Cross Society.
Speaking in an interview, chairman for Muslim Association of Malawi in Balaka, Sheikh Ismaela Ntiko, said Kuwait is aware of the needs that vulnerable Malawians of the religion face during Ramadan.
“The donation is important because we are currently fasting as Muslims. At this time, it is difficult to have strength and eat in the evening. It is worse for vulnerable people because they may not afford the recommended diet at this time,” he said.
One of the beneficiaries in the district, Loveness Kamende, said hailed the organization.
“The economic situation in the country is tough in Balaka at the moment. As such, the donation has come in a timely manner as we need enough food in the evening since we are fasting during the day,” she said.
